About the Instructor...

When Derek was younger he initially started riding english, competing in primarily in show jumping. With this love of horses, Derek decided to futher his career and passed several BHS qualifications.

His experience also covers TV and training horses for video shows namely Big Breakfast, They Think It's All Over, Paul O'Grady, Sky Living, Record Breakers, video for The Cure. Derek has not only competed at UK western and english shows but, in addition, was a VIP guest at the Calgary Stampede in Canada and worked in Montana on a cattle ranch for a period of time to gain further insight into his chosen career. Derek boasts having competing horses for over 30 years and became one of the top western rider in the UK for over 20 years.

But all of this was undertaken whilst working full time for a local company but with the recession looming, and being an outdoor person Derek was made redundant and decided he should put his experiences in riding both english and western to good use and so was born Western Ways. Primarily Western Ways is a training and trekking centre but does include topical monthly clinics such as round pen techniques, breaking and training youngstock and preparing the competition horse.

Having successfully acquired any additional qualifications, Derek has also undertaken Child Protection Awareness, Health and Safety, First Aid certificate and a City and Guilds Certificate of competence for transportation of animals. Derek also holds a full enhanced CRB.

Many of our clients are referred by our existing customers. At Western Ways you will arrive as a customer and leave as a friend.
